Maintain Healthy Skin in High Temperatures

I’ve already talked about important sun protection products and how to sweat-proof your makeup, but what’s even more essential than that? Taking proper care of your skin.

Changing climates can have a dramatic effect on your skin, especially when moving to a place where you encounter entirely different types of weather and temperatures. For the majority of the year, unlike San Francisco, Gainesville is very hot. Heat means sweat, and sweat means oil. Oil means breakouts and pimples that lead to unwanted blemishes. Yikes. When I first moved across the country, my skin flipped out. I had to adapt my skin-care routine to deal with new excess oil and unsightly breakouts.

“When sweat, natural oils and dead cells on the top layer of your skin mix, pores can become clogged and cause breakouts,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, scientific communications director and L’Oréal Paris Skin Care Expert.

In high-temperatures and humidity, your skin is more likely to react and freak out on you, which means it’s especially important to treat it with the right products. Yes, you can cover those pimples and blemishes with makeup, but who doesn’t want smooth, flawless-looking skin in the first place?

Today I will be sharing some skin-care tips that can help you keep your skin clear and healthy, even in hot weather.

Facial Cleansers

As the skin produces more oil, cleansing is a crucial step to maintaining a bright complexion in humidity. I’ve found that using a combination of facial washes, one for in the morning and a different one at night, works the best. Using more than one type at a time reduces the chances that your skin will become used to the product and end up not working as effectively.

Cleansing in the morning helps clear the skin of any oil and dead skin cells that were created from your skin regenerating and repairing itself overnight. It also can help prevent excess oil production the rest of the day, which in turn helps prevent future unwanted breakouts and blemishes. For mornings, I opt for a light cleanser such as Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser. At $22.50, this cleanser is especially great for oily skin because it gently exfoliates it while also minimizing your pores. It’s formulated with special ingredients to help remove oil, dirt and toxins that can build up and create breakouts.

Cleansing at night is even more vital than in the morning. Going to bed with a clean face allows your skin to be able to breathe. After using a makeup remover/cleansing wipe to get rid of all my makeup and built up dirt accumulated from the day, I use the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub. This scrub contains maximum-strength Salicylic Acid acne medicine that works to clear blemishes and clogged up pores. It also has gentle microbeads that smooth away roughness without drying out or irritating your skin, leaving your face feeling fresh and prepped for overnight revitalization.

Facial Masks

No need to book an appointment at a spa, there are plenty of facial masks that you can do right at home! Once or twice a week, I like to use a facial mask to give my skin an extra deep cleansing. Among my favorite formulas is the Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask. The bamboo charcoal works to “draw-out” particles that may be clogging your pores while the white china clay helps absorb built up toxins accumulated throughout the day. Although its a little on the pricey side at $26, it can last you for months and works wonders to prevent imperfections on your oily skin.

“Sweat and humidity might make you feel greasier, but your skin still needs moisture to say healthy,” says dermatologist Amy Weschler, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Although you may not realize it, the salt in your sweat can actually dehydrate your skin.

The Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is a light serum that is perfect for oily skin. It’s lightweight, oil-free and hydrates your skin without causing breakouts. If you ever find yourself in a cooler, drier climate you can switch to using the product’s sister, Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, which is a slightly thicker formula meant for drier skin.

By taking note of these tips, you can combat your oily shine and help keep your skin looking healthy, radiant and pimple-free even in the hottest of climates.
